GTA 6, one of the most hyped games out there, is actually being made mostly in the UK. You might think British politicians would be jumping up and down bragging about it, right? Well, not quite. According to Ian Murray, the UK’s Minister of State for Creative Industries, Media and Arts, the government isn’t exactly the loudest cheerleader for the game or the UK’s gaming scene in general.
Why the UK Isn’t Publicly Celebrating GTA 6
Ian Murray told a podcast that if the UK were like the US, the government would be “puffing out our chests, putting up the flags and marching up and down the main street, championing what we do.” But instead, the UK tends to keep things a bit low-key and self-deprecating when it comes to celebrating cultural wins.
It’s a bit of a missed opportunity because the UK gaming industry is huge. Rockstar Games, the brains behind GTA, Red Dead Redemption, and other massive titles, has many studios based in the UK. Plus, big names like Playground Games, known for Forza Horizon, and Rocksteady, famous for the Batman Arkham series, all hail from British soil.
Murray acknowledges this and says the government is trying to change the narrative. The UK’s industrial strategy now includes creative industries as a key sector, signaling official support for gaming and other creative fields. But the hype machine still isn’t quite revving up like it does elsewhere.
GTA 6 Is a Global Project, With Strong UK Involvement
While GTA 6 is influenced heavily by British talent, it’s not just a UK-only project. Rockstar’s development spans several countries, including the US, India, Australia, and Canada. This kind of international teamwork isn’t new for Rockstar. For instance, Red Dead Redemption 2 also had multiple studios working together.
The game’s release date is still a mystery, and Rockstar hasn’t confirmed when we’ll finally get to dive into the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto universe. On top of that, the PC version’s release remains unconfirmed, possibly because most of GTA Online’s revenue (about 97%) comes from consoles, making PC a lower priority for now.
Even with all the controversy Rockstar’s games often bring, GTA remains a cultural heavyweight and a big deal for the UK gaming industry. Yet, the government seems hesitant to fully embrace or loudly celebrate it, possibly because the game isn’t exactly a tame or purely artistic project like some French hits the UK admires.
So, while GTA 6 is largely British-made and could be a massive boost for the UK gaming scene, don’t expect British politicians to be waving flags anytime soon. They’re working on it, but as Murray said, it’s just not how the UK usually rolls.
