Cyberpunk 2077 is about to get a serious glow-up on PS5 Pro starting April 8. After years of waiting, CD Projekt Red is finally rolling out a major update that brings new performance profiles and advanced ray tracing tech designed to make Night City look sharper and run smoother than ever on Sony’s beefier console.
Three PS5 Pro Performance Modes That Let You Pick Your Visual Flavor
The update introduces three graphics modes tailored for the PS5 Pro’s power. The star of the show is Ray Tracing Pro, which uses a new 8-way bounding volume hierarchy (BVH8) ray tracing system. This tech tracks up to eight rays of light to deliver better reflections, shadows, and overall lighting. It aims for 30 frames per second on standard displays and can push up to 40 fps on screens with variable refresh rate (VRR). While it’s not quite the ultra ray tracing level PC players enjoy, it’s a significant leap forward on console, bringing visuals closer to what CD Projekt Red originally envisioned.
Next up is the Ray Tracing mode, a balanced option that mixes select ray tracing features with smoother gameplay, targeting a solid 60 fps.
Then there’s the Performance mode, which ditches most ray tracing to prioritize frame rates, going as high as 90 fps on VRR-enabled displays. This gives players the freedom to decide if they want jaw-dropping visuals or buttery-smooth action.
Powered by Sony’s PSSR 2 and Loaded with Visual Upgrades

This update takes full advantage of Sony’s latest PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2 technology. It’s an AI-driven upscaling method that sharpens image quality without sacrificing frame rates. This means Cyberpunk’s dense, neon-lit Night City will look crisper and more vibrant without the usual performance hits.
Kuba Knapik, CD Projekt Red’s vice president and global art director, summed it up nicely: “We wanted to make the most of the PS5 Pro’s cutting-edge technology by bringing 4K visuals, powered-up performance, advanced ray tracing, and more to the Cyberpunk 2077 experience.” He added that these improvements bring lighting and reflections closer to the studio’s artistic vision, promising Night City will shine brighter than ever.
Worth It for PS5 Pro Owners and Cyberpunk Fans
Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way since its rocky launch in 2020. With this update, CD Projekt Red is showing that even years later, games can evolve alongside new hardware. If you own a PS5 Pro, this free update is a solid reason to boot up Night City again and explore its streets with fresh eyes.
While no new story content is included, the visual and performance boosts make this a meaningful upgrade. Plus, with Cyberpunk available on PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, more players can check out the improvements easily.
So, mark your calendar for April 8. Whether you want those jaw-dropping ray-traced reflections or silky-smooth frame rates, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro is about to look and feel better than it ever has.
