So, out of the blue, a blank Steam store page named “Rust 2” showed up and immediately set the survival game community buzzing. No trailer, no screenshots, just the title and a curious “free to play” tag. Naturally, Rust fans started wondering if a sequel is finally on the horizon after all these years.
Unlisted ‘Rust 2’ Steam Page Appears With Free-to-Play Tag
The page isn’t easy to find by browsing Steam; it’s unlisted and only accessible through a direct link. If you poke around, you’ll notice it has zero info besides the name and free-to-play label. SteamDB even flagged it as suspicious, calling it potentially malicious or an impersonation.
This sparked plenty of speculation. Is Facepunch Studios gearing up to surprise us all? Or is this some sneaky marketing stunt? Reddit was flooded with screenshots and theories, but the whole thing feels like a puzzle missing a few pieces.
Facepunch Responds With Cryptic Message After Leak
Facepunch’s COO, Alistair McFarlane, dropped a cryptic comment on Reddit about the leak, simply saying, “You saw nothing.” That’s about as clear as mud, but it definitely fanned the flames. The Reddit account that first posted the Steam page images had only just been created, which adds a layer of mystery and suspicion.
Alistair also admitted he frequents the Rust subreddit and sometimes sees posts that confuse people. He teased, “Now you’re all questioning yourselves, is this real? Maybe?” If that’s not a cheeky way of teasing something, I don’t know what is.
Is Rust 2 Actually in Development? What We Know So Far
Rust has been a huge hit since its early access days in 2013. Its mix of survival, scavenging, and player-versus-player chaos keeps thousands hooked daily. The community has long wondered if Facepunch would ever make a proper sequel to evolve the formula further.
Back in 2023, Facepunch founder Garry Newman mentioned that Rust 2 wouldn’t use Unity because of pricing changes. After Unity reversed those changes, though, the sequel fell off the radar. So this Steam page’s appearance might hint that the project has quietly revived.
Could Rust 2 Be Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2026?
Summer Game Fest is just around the corner in June, the perfect stage for a big reveal. If Facepunch is planning something, dropping this mysterious page now could be their way to stir excitement ahead of the event.
For now, Rust fans will have to wait and watch. No official confirmation yet, but with Rust still rocking the top ten on Steam player counts, a free-to-play Rust 2 could shake things up big time.
Until we get more details, it’s all just a teasing mystery. But hey, it’s way more fun this way, right?
